28 Mar Welgevonden’s Lovable Lions
Although they are not necessarily the largest or most powerful of all animals, lions are often referred to as the “King of the Jungle” due to their regal posture, characteristic, deafening roar that can even be heard from 6km away, and the obvious influence of “The Lion King”.
Lions are unlike any other member of the cat family in that they are social and reside in groups called prides. Like your typical house cat however, these members of the big five enjoy having an afternoon kip and prefer to hunt during the cooler hours of the day, or at night.
Other interesting facts include:
COMMON NAME: Lion
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Panthera leo
TYPE: Mammal
DIET: Carnivore
GROUP NAME: Pride
WEIGHT: Male: 170 to 235 kg; Female: 130 to 200 kg
GESTATION PERIOD: 110 days
LIFE SPAN: Approximately 15 years
STATUS: Vulnerable
Recently, we asked some of the guides from various lodges to share their favourite photos of the 11 magnificent lions that reside within Welgevonden Game Reserve.
This is what we were able to compile…
Enjoy!
