Heavy Rains Lead to Closure of Welgevonden Game Reserve

Vaalwater, 1st of March 2025 – Severe and sustained rainfall across Welgevonden Game Reserve has caused structural damage to primary access roads, rendering them impassable. Over the past weeks the Reserve has recorded an average rainfall of 320mm, the Reserve’s infrastructure is now incapable of supporting guest movement, supply logistics, or emergency operations. This has led to the decision to close the Reserve till the 21st of March.

Neil Davison, COO at Welgevonden Game Reserve, explains: “With most of our roads severely compromised and in many cases unsafe, and more rain forecasted for the next week, this decision was taken to ensure the safety of all those involved in the Reserve. He adds, “At Welgevonden, our highest priorities have always been the safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff, the conservation of our wildlife, and the preservation of the wilderness. Unfortunately, under these conditions, all three are at risk. We must take the necessary steps to prevent further damage and ensure a sustainable recovery for the Reserve.”

Welgevonden Game Reserve will remain closed to visitors until the 21st of March, when the situation will be reassessed. Updates will be provided as the roads dry out but it is likely to take weeks to effect emergency repairs, once this is possible. Welgevonden Game Reserve has a specialized roads team that will commence repairs immediately when conditions allow. With proven expertise and additional external support, they will ensure that access routes are restored efficiently and effectively. While the heavy rains have temporarily disrupted operations, they also bring long-term benefits to the Reserve. The replenished water sources and rejuvenated vegetation will ensure a thriving ecosystem in the months ahead, setting the stage for spectacular wildlife sightings and a lush, healthy bushveld as we move into the dry season.
