Baboons, an icon, comic or scourge?

Baboons are a fascinating and intelligent species that have complex social structures and interactions, even prompting the well-known naturalist and poet Eugene Marais to dedicate "The Soul of the Ape" and "My Friends the Baboons" to them after devoting 3 years of study of this species.

A most unusual occurrence!

Recently,  a radio call was received from a guide on game drive that there were two tsessebe with their horns entangled near Tsessebe Drive. The Conservation Officer Samuel Davidson-Phillips and myself set off to investigate and see what, if anything, could be done to assist these animals.

Welgevonden Game Reserve proudly announces the establishment of a R30 million game purchase programme. With the programme, the existing game population will be increased significantly with the introduction of more impala, wildebeest, zebra, waterbuck and hippo.

Cheetah with broken leg

On the evening of the 28th March 2015 a report was received that one of Welgevonden’s adult female cheetah had a broken right back leg. This female together with her 4 cubs and an older juvenile male, that has linked up with the group, are by far the most visible and tourist friendly cheetah on the Reserve.
