02 Nov De-collering an elephant
This animal was one of the bulls that underwent an experimental vasectomy in July 2006.
The collar was put on the animal in order to be able to monitor his recovery from the procedure as well as monitor his behaviour over time. However, it was now getting a bit too tight.
Everything fell into place to remove the collar after numerous attempts and occasions when it was inconvenient. The elephant bull was located, the veterinarian and helicopter were available, and we were good to go.
No ill effects from one of the first laparoscopic vasectomies to be performed on elephants, have been observed and no unexpected behaviour from any of the four vasectomized animals has been noted.
